This elective offers students the opportunity to observe and participate in the medicolegal death investigations performed by staff at Sparrow Forensic Pathology which serves as the Medical Examiner’s office for multiple counties in Mid-Michigan. Students will have the opportunity to participate in daily staff meetings where the death scene investigations are reviewed, to observe and participate in selected forensic autopsies, to participate in post autopsy procedures (histology review, toxicology report review, etc.), and learn to appropriately complete a death certificate. Students will also be provided with reading assignments to familiarize them with the basic concepts in death investigation, the forensic autopsy, and with various types of injuries encountered in forensic pathology. Students will be required to give a brief (15 – 20 minute) presentation (on a forensic related topic mutually agreed upon by the student and course staff) near the end of the course. Students may have the opportunity to attend court proceedings (trials) and death scenes, as available during the rotation.
