Overview

Our program runs from July-June, but available rotation blocks will vary by elective.

We only accept visiting student applications through the AAMC Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO) Domestic Network. We cannot accept applications for electives outside of VSLO.

MSU COM and CMU students should not submit applications on VSLO. Please see the MSU COM & CMU Students (link) tab for more information.

All inquiries regarding elective opportunities at the MSU CHM Lansing Campus should be directed to our Elective Coordinator, Bryanna Powers, at smit1617@msu.edu.

Application Timeline

The timeline for the 2025-2026 VSLO season is below:

  • Our VSLO catalog is viewable now, so you can browse our available electives, dates, and requirements.
  • Our VSLO catalog will open for applications at 12 PM on Friday, April 18, 2025.
  • Applications will take some time to review, but we will begin notifying students of decisions by May 16, 2025.
    • Some departments take longer than others to process applications. You will be notified once a decision has been made.

We continue to accept applications throughout the academic year and notify students of decisions once they have been made.

Rotating off-cycle is not permitted. You must rotate according to the dates specified above.

A note about 2-week rotations: These abbreviated rotations should only be scheduled during times that you do not anticipate needing a lot of time off. For example, we discourage scheduling a 2-week rotation during peak interview season. The departments that offer 2-week rotations do so with the expectation that students will have minimal to no absences. If you request a lot of time off during a shortened rotation, the department may end up cancelling the rotation altogether.

Not all electives are available on all of these dates, and not all electives offer 2-week rotations. See the Visiting Student Elective Catalog and our VSLO Catalog for more information.

Affiliated Residency Programs

Our campus offers students access to a large selection of specialty and subspecialty rotations, some of which are affiliated with UMH-Sparrow and/or MSU residency programs. Please note that some of these residency and fellowship programs do not offer elective clerkships to visiting students. All of our available electives are outlined in our VSLO catalog.

Some of the electives in our catalog are not eligible for audition rotations as they are not affiliated with a residency program. This is clearly indicated throughout the VSLO application. If you have questions about the residency affiliation of any given elective, please see the Visiting Student Elective Catalog for more information.

Note about rotations at McLaren: our office does not schedule any visiting student rotations at McLaren Greater Lansing. To request a rotation at McLaren, follow this link.

Rotation Limits

Visiting students may complete a maximum of 8 weeks or two total rotations with us. The non-refundable $150 VSLO processing fee must only be submitted once, even if you are completing two rotations with us.
